Durham Cathedral, Light and Landscape

home page

St. Nicholas' Church Hall, Durham, July 25 - August 5th 1993

Durham Cathedral is the perfect model for studying the effects of light on form and colour. As the mood of the day softens, the Cathedral's severe outline is subdued by the increasing visibility of the intricate Norman architecture. And it's colour changes in harmony with the prevailing light, until the sun sets and the colours fade.

At night, it is the light of man which spotlights the dramatic spectral splendour of Durham Cathedral from Palace Green. This human light, a ray of hope, a beam of pride, only lasts until dawn, when the sun once more rises, and reminds us of our true place and fleeting presence on the Earth.
The paintings of Durham Cathedral Sunset, and from Palace Green, were also displayed as part of the Cathedral 900 celebrations.
