About Gillie

Gillie with youngest son Edward at the Holland & Holland exhibition in New York.

My work is very much based on my love of the natural world, and I am fascinated by the effects of light and atmosphere. I hope to pass on to viewers of my pictures, some of the enjoyment and wonder that I experience, particularly in nature, but also in magnificent buildings like Durham Cathedral.

Watercolour is my preferred medium these days, but I also enjoy using soft pastel. Mountains, rivers, lakes, and the sea have always been favourite subjects. The manmade environment also has many attractions, including buildings, townscapes, and gardens. I am currently exploring the relationship between industrial and natural landscapes. My work is slowly becoming more abstract, and although form is still very important to me, I find I am playing increasingly, with light, time and emotional and environmental conditions.
